East Village and Central Library

 Students have been working hard for the past few months learning about community and buildings!
Our trip to the East Village was a research mission to observe and record different buildings that we saw and whether we would classify them as a NEED or WANT within the community. There have been some wonderful conversations in our classroom and in the field while deciding which was the best fit: need or want.  Over the weekend you may want to discuss this same thing when you're in the car or out and about!

Calgary Zoo

We visited the Calgary Zoo to work on our photography skills and sketching.   Throughout the day, students had an opportunity to walk through the Canadian Wilds and take photos of the animals in their habitats.   We practiced using the zoom feature on the iPads and talked about how we need to make sure the photo isn’t too close because then it will be blurry. They also worked on sketching like a scientist by visiting their favourite animals and taking time to add details to their sketches. Students also had time to explore on their own.   Everyone did a great job of walking on this trip and we had such a beautiful day! Spring Update

Wow! It is hard to believe we are on the home stretch for grade one with only two more months to go! We have been keeping very busy in the classroom and have had some great experiences in the field. Alberta/BC Guide Dog Services We had a furry visitor from Alberta Guide Dog Services visit our classroom in April, Arthur! His trainer as well as a representative from the company came to share with us how these dogs help in the community and assist those with vision loss. They shared the important training process and specific rules that Arthur has to follow to be successful in the program. St. Patrick's Island We celebrated Earth Day at the end of April.  Students were given the challenge for the morning of trying to think of ways and be mindful of leaving the island better than we found it. Calgary Tower and K.I.D.

Calgary Tower Field Study Last week, we had an exciting visit to the Calgary Tower! This was a wonderful opportunity for students to see many places that they already knew about from a new perspective.  When we arrived, students were captivated by the glass floor and everyone was brave enough to walk out! The rest of our day was split into two activities.  First, we looked north, east, south and west and created a map of important landmarks, with the Calgary Tower in the middle.  Next, students used tablets to answer questions about the history of the Calgary Tower as well as local buildings.  Here are few fun facts that we learned throughout the day!
