Spring Update

Wow! It is hard to believe we are on the home stretch for grade one with only two more months to go!

We have been keeping very busy in the classroom and have had some great experiences in the field.

Alberta/BC Guide Dog Services
We had a furry visitor from Alberta Guide Dog Services visit our classroom in April, Arthur! His trainer as well as a representative from the company came to share with us how these dogs help in the community and assist those with vision loss. They shared the important training process and specific rules that Arthur has to follow to be successful in the program.

St. Patrick's Island
We celebrated Earth Day at the end of April.  Students were given the challenge for the morning of trying to think of ways and be mindful of leaving the island better than we found it. They came up with lots of great ideas: stay on the paths, don't wreck nature, don't litter and leave animals alone. It was a perfect day for students to take notice of seasonal change.  They were asked to record in their journals things that they heard, felt or saw that were signs of either winter or spring.  We also tested the pigment of various natural objects in our journals.

Fiasco Gelato
Throughout the month of April, we have been exploring with colour: students have used various mediums to mix, create and discover. We are working on a beautiful art project with our grade 5 buddies using material that we died with fruits and vegetables. Visiting Fiasco Gelato, tied in with our study of community as they are a local business.  Students watched a video demonstrating the team work and perseverance required for this community to be successful and the ongoing support and trial and error that is required. We used our sense of sight and smell to predict flavour combinations and then were FINALLY allowed to taste and guess the ingredients that were each of the three flavour samples.
