Calgary Tower and K.I.D.

Calgary Tower Field Study

Last week, we had an exciting visit to the Calgary Tower! This was a wonderful opportunity for students to see many places that they already knew about from a new perspective.  When we arrived, students were captivated by the glass floor and everyone was brave enough to walk out! The rest of our day was split into two activities.  First, we looked north, east, south and west and created a map of important landmarks, with the Calgary Tower in the middle.  Next, students used tablets to answer questions about the history of the Calgary Tower as well as local buildings.

Here are few fun facts that we learned throughout the day! Do you know the answer?

The Calgary Tower is the ____ tallest building in Calgary.

How may floors are in the Calgary Tower's superstructure?

What was the original name of the Calgary Tower?

How many pounds can the glass floor hold?

Which animal has come up the elevator at the Calgary Tower?

What did the Calgary Police try to bring up the elevator at the Calgary Tower?

How tall is the Calgary Tower?

Answers: 6th, 5, Husky Tower, 6000, horse, motorcycle, 191m

Kid Inventors Day

On January 17, Langevin School celebrated Kid Inventors Day! The Grade Ones were presented with the following challenge and asked to invent a solution.

The elevator to the Calgary Tower is broken! Invent a new solution to move people from the ground up to the observation deck.

Students took time to brainstorm ideas with their peers and then came up with and recorded their plan.  On their plan they had to include: the Calgary Tower, their invention, a person and label all of the materials that they planned on using.  Next they had time to build, test and adjust their inventions to see if they would work.  I'm not sure that I would want to catapulted to the top of the Calgary Tower, but they ensured me it was safe! haha

This is always a fun and creative morning!
